There is also the possibility that this person wasn't really a friend but rather a 1 time trade aquaintance. Sometimes if I wanna buy or sell somethin, the person interested might say somethin like "oh my stuff is on the other account, brb". So I add them to the friends list so I can keep track of them in case they forget to take down info or if I need to ask if they're still interested or whatnot. Had a lot of failed trades early on simply from losing track of the other player

The real question is why your friend had asshats in his friends list.

Maybe he do what I do, and use his friends list to keep track of asshats and bots (with the bonus that it lets you gloat when they disappear).
Or maybe your friend runs with asshats.

It's natural, no pay2play=annoying kids+everything that comes with them.

And anyone who still thinks Elona's Reach is easy? The mission itself, sure, but the team work.........

I don't think mankind is ready for a "cooperative" RPG at this point in history.
Most people age 35 have learned to cooperate in life to some degree. Most 15 year olds have yet to master this art. Also, some cultures place greater value on cooperation and politeness (say, British or Korean) than other cultures (say, American), in which many people live by the creed: Greed is Good. Conflicts between people in the real world are mostly about cooperation. GW is just a microcosmos, with a bias towards immaturity.

The best thing to do: just laugh at immature behaviour, don't let it get to you, don't put people in your ignore list unless they stalk you (it is too much credit you are giving them), take a few screenshots and make a report if someone is really bad. Try to find the 30-40% nice people to play with (more than that, really). Try to be fair and tolerant, but don't insist on fairness for the whole world. If you are a caring idealist, you better safe your energy for the problems of the real world.

Well... maybe Korean, I don't know. British... not really. Plenty of british yobs, unfortunately.

One thing with the EU servers is that the guys who moved to US servers because the EU had favor too seldom are now returning.

Not all the expatriates were asshats of course, but personally I'm of the opinion a disproportionate part of the EU asshats followed the favor, and that's a big reason why the EU servers have been so friendly, but now they're returning, raising the asshat level on the EU servers.

Also, as asshats are flock creatures, we're probably getting some of the US asshats aswell.

Up until just a week or two ago, "ur a n00b" type discussions were rare on EU servers, now it seems they make up about half the chat. Prices on items are skyrocketing to US levels. And I've been playing since April, but not until yesterday did I meet a racist in PvE.

Or maybe it's just that GW has started taking players from WoW.

Well, I have seen plenty unpleasant stuff being said on the European severs. In fact, the worst of those (at least from those I could understand) were from people from my own country (the Netherlands) which must rank among the worlds rudest people if our representatives in the game are anything to go by.

But in pvp, I admit, I have seen more rude comments in the International districts compared to Europe (tombs especially), but this may be changing. I have noticed a sharp increase in peeps spamming the local chat with trade adverts over the last month or so. In Droknar's, it is now so bad that you need to switch local off if you want to have a whispered conversation with someone. Asking someone politely to stop spamming the trade chat used to work often, before, but now that seems to have become pointless. This may well be the result of migration of ecto farmers.

I think the biggest reason we have so many jerks, is that unlike other games we don't have a jerk zone. Some games have a crime zone or a red light district, so the jerks go there and leave the rest of us alone.
